Worried about staying fit this year? Don’t panic – I have all the tips you need to get you kick started and to keep you motivated beyond the New Year 😉

Tip number 1. Plan your week ahead

If you have a favourite gym/group class, put that into your diary like you would any other arrangement. Use your weekends for longer workouts that you can also integrate with other commitments. If you are a parent and the kids are busy playing rugby, football or tennis, use that time to go for a walk or run until their game is finished.

When planning your workouts try and find a purpose for them, so if its running then maybe run work! Make sure you warm up inside by doing some dynamic stretches to get your heart rate up so by the time you are outside you’re already warm, awake and ready to go.

2. Set a big goal to get you out of the winter rut

If you don’t have a training goal, or have been slacking off with the one that you have already made, it’s time to shake things up. Whether you want to lose weight, or get faster or stronger then set a reasonable goal and make it as specific as possible. Try to think of a goal that involves numbers or things that you can measure – like getting fit enough to do a running race in the spring. Or you might want to lose inches from your waist for your spring holiday body :).

3. Find a training buddy

Find someone who will commit to joining you in your workouts, and hold you accountable for showing up. Knowing someone is waiting for you to share the pain might be just the stimulus you need to throw back the covers and get out of the house!

Another great idea is to get a group of friends together to go on a long walk /jog. You can also arrange a park to walk to and then set up a mini circuit you can do together  To follow that, go for a delicious healthy brunch afterwards, this way you can explore lots of different restaurants at the same time ;). Make it more of a social event than thinking “dreaded weekend work out.” When you have work out buddies it makes it so much easier to stay on track and push each other so that no one falls off the wagon.

4. make your work outs short and sharp

Instead of long and time consuming workouts , it will keep you more motivated doing shorter and more intense sessions. Shorter and more vigorous workouts on a regular basis improve your overall results and help you maintain your fitness. Even if it’s 15 minutes a day, do something that is training your body with purpose: the WakeUpWorkout. For example 15mins of hiit exercises watch and try this workout below.

5. Invest in home gym equipment

If you really hate the cold, then I would recommend investing in some simple gym equipment for your home. I would suggest dumbbells, med balls, yoga mat, resistance bands and  if you want to really step up your work outs you could buy a TRX.

There are also lots of fitness apps available these days that give you video work outs. You can also purchase my online 8 week fitness program HERE and follow my Instagram page for video work outs and ideas.

6. Get new work out gear

I always like to invest in some funky work out gear at this time of year, it seems to give me that boost to get up and go and exercise. Its like when you buy  new shoes you can’t wait to get them on and show them off! Running shoes and clothes should make you feel the same way :). It is also a great excuse to hit the shops again.

7. Try a new class or work out programme.

Trying a new work out or programme really helps you feel motivated and also improve your fitness levels. Keeping variety in your workout is the best way to improve your fitness and hit your goals especially when you are wanting to lose weight and tone. The other good thing about this is if you invest in to a block of sessions or a workout programme then you are more likely to keep going and turning up because you have paid for it. Also trying something new that you enjoy also makes your work outs less effort and more enjoyable. Click HERE to start a new healthy lifestyle with my training methods 🙂
